Impact in Action: A Journey from Gashora to Global Impact

"Gashora Girls Academy celebrated diversity and inclusivity, which is evident in its financial aid programs, ensuring that no girl, regardless of economic background, was denied education. This approach enriched our learning experiences with diverse perspectives.

My dream is to see a world where every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to their community in meaningful ways. This vision drives my professional ambitions and personal goals."

My name is Jeannette Umutoni; you can also call me Toni. I Am a proud alumna of the Gashora Girls Academy Class of 2014. I'm a STEM graduate student pursuing a Master's degree in Global Business and Health Care Delivery at Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University, renowned as the top school in the U.S. for global management.

As I reflect on my time at Gashora Girls Academy, I see that it was unique in many ways, notably through its holistic education approach (educating a whole girl), which fostered not only academic excellence but leadership skills, preparing us to face modern world challenges.  While at Gashora, I didn't fully grasp the significance of "Whole Girl" education, but it has since become my guiding mantra. Gashora taught me essential life skills, such as confidently navigating any environment and standing out. I learned I am not confined to societal expectations but can pursue any dream. Gashora taught me to challenge the status quo and strive for my aspirations.

In addition, as an all-girls school with a strong focus on Sciences and Technology, Gashora was pivotal in showcasing the capabilities of girls in science and technology in Rwanda, a field where women are globally underrepresented. The school's commitment to bridging this gap by empowering female students was truly inspiring.

"Gashora's impact is a testament to the power of an educational environment that values diversity and empowerment, principles that continue to guide my work and vision. Gashora was pivotal in showcasing the capabilities of girls in science and technology in Rwanda, a field where women are globally underrepresented. "

Needless to say, Gashora provided me with a foundation that was crucial in founding the New Horizon Initiative (NHI) organization.  Inspired by Gashora, we embrace diversity and ensure no talent is overlooked. Founding NHI responded to the gaps I observed in support systems for global communities in the United States. During my experiences here, it became clear that there was a significant need for a centralized hub of resources that could efficiently and effectively cater to diverse international needs. NHI aims to provide comprehensive support services tailored specifically to the challenges faced by global community members. Whether it's legal assistance, educational programs, professional development, or cultural integration support, we aim to ensure every individual has the tools to succeed and thrive in a new environment.

Toni’s duel graduation receiving bachelors from BOTH Southern New Hampshire University and Mount Kenya University.

Before I arrived at Gashora Girls Academy, I viewed education primarily as a means to an academic end, mainly focusing on grades and conventional achievements. I was more hesitant to speak out or step into leadership roles, primarily due to a lack of confidence and a narrow understanding of my capabilities. I started standing before people to make presentations during my time at Gashora, which was a game-changer. These experiences encouraged me to engage deeply with courses, students, and the faculty and opened my eyes to new horizons. This transformation has been pivotal in my journey beyond Gashora, influencing my approach to life and career decisions.

Gashora's impact is a testament to the power of an educational environment that values diversity and empowerment, principles that continue to guide my work and vision. It does not end there. I remember my roots, and have thus partnered to co-found the Well of Life organization, which serves communities in Sub-Saharan Africa to thrive. We started our programs in Rwanda, but our goal is to impact more adolescents and youth in other countries.

I am currently pursuing my Master's degree at Thunderbird School of Global Management after recognizing the need for more profound global management skills to advance my career and non-profit work. My interest in Thunderbird School was sparked by a colleague at the African Management Institute, who introduced me to the school's innovative programs. Its reputation for fostering global leaders impressed me, so I was eager to join its transformative journey. The Master's program at Thunderbird has been both challenging and rewarding. It has equipped me with advanced skills in global strategy and digital transformation. The diverse community and practical, real-world application of the curriculum have prepared me well for future challenges in the global marketplace, preparing me for impactful leadership roles.

“While at school, I was part of the Thunderbird Women in Leadership team (TWB). We aim to empower female business leaders (students) and promote gender equality. We focus on bringing in seasoned professionals to share their experiences and insights, which inspire and equip our members with practical knowledge and strategies for navigating their careers. I have learned invaluable lessons about the power of community and mentorship in professional growth. I gained deeper insights into the systemic barriers that women often encounter and the strategies to overcome them.”

Gashora Girls Academy celebrated diversity and inclusivity, which is evident in its financial aid programs, ensuring that no girl, regardless of economic background, was denied education. This approach enriched our learning experiences with diverse perspectives. I am thankful for the opportunities that have opened doors for me because of my time at Gashora Girls Academy, New Hampshire University, and Thunderbird School. As I look ahead, I believe that together, we can create more sustainable and impactful solutions to the challenges faced by global communities.

My dream is to see a world where every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to their community in meaningful ways. This vision drives my professional ambitions and personal goals.

Thank YOU for partnering with Gashora Girls Academy and investing in the future leaders of Rwanda and the world.  Your support has been a catalyst to hundreds of young women like myself as we aim to reach our goals and serve the communities in which we live.  Thank you.

Help These girls To change the world.
