Finding Home and Purpose
My journey to Davidson College began at Gashora Girls Academy of Science and Technology. Gashora instilled discipline, resilience, and a passion for learning, equipping me to embrace new challenges with confidence.
One year ago, I arrived at Davidson, welcomed by my amazing host family. From day one, the Davidson community became my home away from home. I found belonging in the International Association and the African Student Association, celebrating cultures through food, music, and traditions. One highlight was DIA Cultural Day, when we Rwandans shared our cultural dance, alongside many others celebrating theirs—a proud reminder of our homes.
Like at my time at Gashora, I have learned to take advantage of every opportunity. Through the Msaada Mentorship Program, I was paired a mentor who has guided me toward my dream of becoming a software developer. Thanks to her, I had the incredible opportunity to shadow a senior software engineer at Credit Karma, gaining real-world insight into fintech and confirming my passion for technology.
In the spring, I met the Alvarez family as an Alvarez scholar. The Alvarez family has created opportunities for international students like me to thrive at Davidson.. Through this program, I not only gained support, but I also discovered that I have friends from all around the world—friends who have taught me that our differences are not barriers, but bridges. His legacy continues to inspire me and so many others.
This summer, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with the Summer Programs Office. It was an honor to meet and host so many inspiring people who are living out their vision and mission, and to contribute to their work here at Davidson. I ended this summer with a heart full of gratitude for the lessons learned—not only about them, but also about my own campus and the communities that make it thrive behind the scenes.
Now, as I prepare to begin my sophomore year, I am honored to serve as a Student Leader, a Chidsey Leadership Fellow, and a member of the Next Level Program, which supports first-generation students through mentorship, skill-building, and professional connections. I am deeply grateful to my family and friends in Rwanda, Gashora Girls Academy, my host family, the International Student Engagement team at Davidson College, and the incredible Davidson friends I have found.
Hello, I’m Melissa Mugengano—a rising sophomore and aspiring software developer with a vision to learn, grow, and give back. This is only the beginning 🚀.
